About Us

vanSonitrol of Lexington was started in 1969 by Harry and Ann Miller. As close friends of the Lexington police chief at that time, Harry and his wife learned of the new and exciting concept of Sonitrol, recognizing it as an excellent opportunity. The Millers grew Sonitrol of Lexington until the current owners, Sonny and Pat Bates, purchased the dealership from them in 1984.

Sonny's career in security began as a US Air Force military police officer and from there he worked as police officer for the Dallas Police Department in Dallas, Texas. As a Dallas police officer, Sonny noticed a high number of criminal apprehensions while he and other officers responded to break-ins at businesses and homes protected by Sonitrol. In fact, he first learned of Sonitrol when he responded to a break-in detected by Sonitrol and caught the intruder! Sonny left the police force in 1980 and ended up working for Sonitrol of Dallas, as did his wife Pat. In 1984 they moved to Lexington, Kentucky and purchased the Sonitrol of Lexington franchise. Sonny, Pat and their two sons, Jeremy and Bryan, are all fully active in the day to day operation of the business along with their 50 plus fellow employees.
